Iran-Backed Iraqi Militia To Release American Journalist Shelly Kittleson

The Iran-backed Iraqi militia Kataib Hezbollah says that it will release American journalist Shelly Kittleson, who was kidnapped from a Baghdad street corner last week. The group said in a statement on Tuesday that its decision came “in appreciation of the patriotic stances of the outgoing Prime Minister” Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, without giving more details. It added that “this initiative will not be repeated in future.” Kataib Hezbollah had not previously acknowledged that it was the one responsible for Kittleson’s abduction, although both U.S. and Iraqi officials had pointed fingers at the group. Three Iraqi officials had said earlier in the day that attempts to negotiate her release had run into obstacles.

Fed: Interest Rates Could Soon Head Higher

A top Federal Reserve official says interest rates could soon be heading higher. Beth Hammack, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, prefers to keep the benchmark rate unchanged “for quite some time,” but says an increase could be appropriate if inflation remains persistently above the Fed’s 2% target. Other Fed officials have recently opened the door to potential rate hikes. President Trump has spent his second term criticizing the Fed for not cutting rates further, adding context to the central bank’s cautious approach.

Trump warns a 'whole civilization will die tonight'

A whole civilization will die tonight, says U.S. President Donald Trump in his latest social media post. He warned Iran that 47 years of extortion, corruption, and death will end tonight if Tehran does not agree to a deal reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Trump added that now, with “complete and total regime change,” smarter and less radicalized minds could bring something “revolutionarily wonderful.” Airstrikes have hit two bridges and a train station in Iran, while Iranian officials have urged young people to form human chains to protect power plants. The rhetoric on both sides has reached a fever pitch.

DeSantis signs law targeting 'terrorist' group supporters

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signed a new law giving state leaders the authority to designate groups as domestic or foreign terrorist organizations and expel university students who support them. The measure also requires universities to report some affected students to federal immigration authorities if they are on visas. Critics, including free speech advocacy groups, warn the law could violate First Amendment rights and target student protesters, while DeSantis says it will protect residents and safeguard taxpayer dollars.

Details revealed about pilot rescued in Iran

President Donald Trump and top U.S. officials on Monday offered new details about the high-risk military rescue that retrieved two U.S. military aviators after their fighter jet was shot down over Iran. The president, joined by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and other aides at a White House press conference, described a complex operation that relied on dozens of aircraft, hundreds of personnel and CIA deception tactics to outmaneuver Iranian forces deep inside hostile territory. Trump said one pilot was rescued relatively quickly, while the second — who had been hiding and evading capture in mountainous terrain — was brought out nearly two days later in a daring extraction. U.S. forces used multiple aircraft, including helicopters and refueling tankers, to support what Trump called one of the most challenging combat search-and-rescue missions in recent history. The operation featured strategic deception efforts designed to mislead Iranian forces about the aviators’ location, underscoring the mission’s complexity and the role of intelligence in the rescue

Iran calls for human chains around power plants

President Donald Trump’s deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz is fast approaching, with threats to strike the country’s power plants and bridges if it does not comply. In response, Iran is urging civilians — including young people — to form human chains around key power facilities in an effort to deter attacks. Meanwhile, Israel has warned of possible strikes on Iran’s rail network amid escalating tensions in the region.

Trump endorses Steven Hilton for California governor

President Donald Trump has endorsed Republican Steve Hilton for California governor, reordering a crowded, wide-open race to lead the nation's most populous state. Trump posted late Sunday on his social media platform Truth Social that he has known Hilton for years and called the conservative commentator “a truly fine man” who could turn around a state beset with notoriously high taxes. California, Trump wrote, “has gone to hell.” “With Federal help, and a Great Governor, like Steve Hilton, California can be better than ever before!” Trump added. The endorsement — coming about a month before mail ballots go to voters in advance of the June 2 primary — will help Hilton coalesce conservative support in a race with no clear leader. However, Trump is widely unpopular in heavily Democratic California outside his conservative base and Trump's backing would become a liability if Hilton faces a Democrat in the November election. With a large field, Democrats have been fearful that a quirk in the state's unusual “top two” primary system could allow only two Republicans to reach the November general election ballot — Hilton and GOP rival Chad Bianco, the Riverside County sheriff. Trump's decision — a strong signal to undecided conservative voters — will make that outcome less likely by helping Hilton lure additional support. Democratic consultant Paul Mitchell called Trump's decision “the safe bet” for Republicans. Rather than cling to a long shot hope that both Republicans reach the November ballot — or risk that both Hilton and Bianco fall short — Trump's blessing should consolidate support behind Hilton and allow him to emerge from a large primary field and reach November. “Having a Republican on the top of the ticket is essential" to drive turnout in critical down-ballot races, with control of the U.S. House in play," Mitchell added. In an unpredictable, wide-open race, the smart play for the GOP is to “get one Republican on the ballot.” There are more than 50 candidates on the ballot — including eight established Democrats and along with Hilton and Bianco, the two leading Republicans. An all-GOP general election is possible in California, which puts all candidates on one primary ballot and only the top two vote-getters advance to November, regardless of party. Polling in early February by the nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California found the field had broken into two distinct groups, with Bianco, Hilton and three Democrats — U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell, former Rep. Katie Porter and billionaire climate activist Tom Steyer — in close competition, with other candidates trailing. In a statement, Hilton thanked Trump for his support and promised to grow jobs and bring down the state's punishing cost of living. “Together we can turn things around,” Hilton said. Republicans have not won a statewide election in California in two decades. Registered Democratic voters outnumber Republicans in the state by nearly 2-to-1.

Artemis II moon mission breaks record for distance from Earth

The Artemis II astronauts have kicked off their record-breaking trip around the moon that already is providing unprecedented views of the far side. Monday’s lunar journey comes after the three Americans and one Canadian broke Apollo 13’s distance record, the farthest that humans have ever traveled from Earth. During the hourslong flyby, Artemis II will temporarily lose contact with Mission Control as the capsule passes behind the moon without stopping. Astronauts will split into pairs and take turns capturing the magnificent lunar scenes with cameras. They’ll also don special glasses to witness a total solar eclipse.

Trump Holds News Conference On Rescue Operation In Iran

President Donald Trump on Monday told reporters that Iran could be taken out in one night, "and that night might be tomorrow night," warning Tehran it had to make a deal by Tuesday night or face wider bombing raids. Trump had earlier vowed to enforce a Tuesday night deadline for Iran to agree to a ceasefire deal or face broad attacks on power plants and other critical infrastructure. Trump is demanding Iran forswear nuclear weapons and reopen the Strait of Hormuz oil transit waterway. "The entire country can be taken out in one night, and that night might be tomorrow night," Trump told a White House press conference. "I hope I don't have to do it," Trump said. Critics have said Trump would be committing war crimes if the U.S. attacked civilian power plants, a point that Trump dismissed on Monday. "I'm not worried about it. You know what's a war crime? Having a nuclear weapon," Trump said earlier on Monday during an Easter egg event for children on the White House South Lawn. Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth told the briefing that the largest volume of strikes since day one of the operation against Iran would take place on Monday and warned Tuesday would have even more. Trump, joined by Hegseth and other top national security advisers, described in detail the weekend U.S. operation to recover a downed American airman who hid in mountainous Iranian terrain and eluded capture by Iranian forces. He said the airman, identified only by "Dude 44 Bravo," kept climbing higher in order to improve the chances for recovery. He said the airman was seen moving via an unidentified U.S. camera link. "It was like finding a needle in a haystack," Trump said. Hundreds of American forces were involved in the search and recovery mission and to prevent the Iranians from finding him first, he said. CIA Director John Ratcliffe, who joined Trump at the event, said the agency had engaged in a "deception campaign" to convince the Iranians the airman was somewhere else. Ratcliffe said that on Saturday morning the CIA got confirmation that "one of America's best and bravest was alive and concealed in a mountain crevice, still invisible to the enemy, but not to the CIA." The pilot, shot down on Friday, was recovered on Sunday morning. "In a breathtaking show of skill and precision, lethality and force, America's military descended on the area, the real area, engaged the enemy, rescued the stranded officer, destroyed all threats and exited Iranian territory while taking no casualties of any kind," Trump said. Hegseth said the lost airman used an emergency transponder to show where he was and his first message was: "God is good." General Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the recovered airman had been the "back seater" on the downed aircraft. "In this case, the back seater's absolute commitment to surviving made much of our efforts possible," Caine said. Trump said, without providing evidence, that the United States has "numerous intercepts" from Iranian civilians urging the U.S. not to let up in trying to dislodge the Iranian government from power. "They would be willing to suffer that in order to have freedom," Trump said. Speaking to reporters earlier at a White House Easter event, Trump said a proposal offered by Iran was inadequate. "They made a proposal, and it's a significant proposal. It's a significant step. It's not good enough," Trump told reporters during the Easter event at the White House. Trump said the five-week conflict could end quickly if Iran does "what they have to do." "They have to do certain things. They know that, they've been negotiating I think in good faith," he said.
