The annual survey, now in its third year, is expected to reaffirm the increasing impact of pharmacists on health outcomes and build on the insights gleaned from nearly 1,000 respondents to the 2024 and 2025 Pharmacy Transformation surveys. The 2026 survey is expected to uncover growth areas, identify pathways for pharmacists to bridge chronic care needs and transform pharmacies into essential health and wellness hubs, especially in underserved areas, and to better understand the opportunities and challenges that exist as pharmacists expand their services.

Key Trends to Watch in 2026

The new survey will build on the insights gleaned in the 2025 Pharmacy Transformation Outlook Survey, and will dive deeper into specialty pharmacy trends. In 2025, the survey results showed that 63% of respondents indicated that more clinical services covered under the medical, rather than pharmacy benefit, meant more revenue. AI-assisted pharmacy management, digital therapeutics, and the idea of “pharmacy as a health hub” debuted in the 2025 survey as trends to watch, as well as:

• Filling care gaps: In 2025, 72% of respondents ranked an expanded role for pharmacists to fill care gaps, such as chronic condition management, as the #1 growth opportunity. In 2025, 34% of respondents expressed optimism centered on the expanding role of pharmacists and the potential of improved patient care, access, and equity.
• Improving operational efficiency and patient care through artificial intelligence (AI), technology, automation, and data analytics will help automate tasks and optimize workflows, with the goal of improving both operational efficiency and patient experience.
• Billing reimbursement and medical billing complications slow growth: 63% of respondents reported that reimbursement was a barrier to expansion, while 55% said medical billing capabilities were a barrier.
• Pharmacies plan to expand within the next 12 to 36 months into specialty drug growth categories, including infertility, hepatitis C, and sleep disorders.
