The award recognizes Street Smart’s innovative use of portable traffic signals and pedestrian crossings to safely manage traffic at one of the nation’s busiest intersections--Loop 101 and Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The award-winning project, “Portable Traffic Signals and Pedestrian Crossings for Complex Urban Work Zones: A Case Study from Scottsdale, AZ,” demonstrated how temporary signalization can maintain mobility and safety during major construction, keeping vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists moving efficiently throughout the project.

During the five-month deployment, a patented temporary signal system was installed on both sides of Loop 101, managing over 12 million vehicle movements, averaging more than 100,000 vehicles per day, without installing pole-mounted signals, electrical hookups, or connecting to signal cabinets. Each trailer was self-powered and fully networked, communicating wirelessly as a coordinated, adaptive signal system. The temporary pedestrian crossing system safely moved hundreds of pedestrians and cyclists daily, maintaining protected crossings through every phase of construction.
