Padres second baseman Luis Rengifo will have season-ending surgery for a torn ACL

CINCINNATI (AP) — San Diego Padres second baseman Luis Rengifo will undergo season-ending surgery for a torn ACL in his right knee.
The Padres announced Monday that imaging showed a full tear of the ACL. The injury had initially been diagnosed as a knee sprain.
Rengifo was injured in the seventh inning of a 7-6 loss to Tampa Bay on Saturday when he threw across his body toward home and fell to to the infield dirt. Rengifo needed assistance getting to his feet before he was driven off the field in a medical cart.
The play happened when two Tampa Bay players were near third base at the same time and Cedric Mullins broke for home. Rengifo was chasing Taylor Walls when he made the throw and immediately went down.
Rengifo started the season with the Milwaukee Brewers, who released him on June 23. He hit .205 in 57 games with the Brewers.
The 29-year-old appeared in 38 games for the Padres, hitting .292 with four homers.
