Off-duty officer rescues two men from train derailment

LILBURN, Ga. (AP) — Authorities said an off-duty Georgia police officer rescued two men from a train derailment that caught fire. Lilburn Police Officer Almedin Ajanovic was heading home from an off-duty job around 1:30 a.m. Sunday when he heard about the CSX derailment through the radio dispatch. Police said Ajanovic rushed toward the overturned cars while hearing an explosion and seeing massive flames. Police said he later rescued two men. Police said a washout caused by storms and flooding caused the train to derail. The train was carrying hazardous material, which caused police to evacuate the area. Ajanovic said he was glad the rescued men were able to go back to their families.
