Police clash with protesters in major California cities

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Demonstrators outraged at the death of George Floyd at the hand of police in Minneapolis have protested in major California cities but the mostly peaceful marches were marred by vandalism and clashes that injured several police officers. San Jose, Los Angeles and Oakland demonstrations were disrupted by confrontations and by some demonstrators blocking freeways. In San Jose, police fired tear gas and rubber bullets on demonstrators. The Mercury News says an SUV backed into at least two demonstrators and a sheriff’s deputy fired at the fleeing vehicle. Protests were noisy but mostly peaceful in other cities, including Sacramento.
