Co-curated by independent Indigenous curator Nakaw Putun, NTMoFA curator Lai Chun-chieh, and MoCNA chief curator Manuela Well-Off-Man, “Breaking Ground” focuses on the history of Taiwanese Indigenous Peoples and explores issues of cultural identity, land, and language in a contemporary context.

The exhibition features ten works of Taiwanese Indigenous artists, including Idas Losin, Aluaiy Kaumakan, Mayaw Biho, Chang En-man, Ciwas Tahos, Ali Istanda, Labay Eyong, Rngrang Hungul, Makotaay Eco Art Village, and Iyo Kacaw. As one of MoCNA’s largest exhibitions this year, it aims to highlight the challenges and depth of contemporary Indigenous art in Taiwan while fostering cultural dialogue with Indigenous communities in the U.S.

The Taiwan Academy in Houston noted that the exhibition represents a new partnership between Taiwan’s Indigenous arts community and one of the U.S.’s leading Indigenous art platforms. By integrating dance, video, and contemporary art, it seeks to deepen interdisciplinary exchange between Indigenous cultures in Taiwan and the U.S., while showcasing the vitality and resilience of Indigenous Peoples in modern society.
