The U.S. economy grew at a 3.4% annualized rate in Q3 2026—the fastest in a year and ahead of forecasts—driven by a boom in business investment (especially AI-related equipment and data centers), resilient consumer spending, and government outlays. Markets and 401(k) balances have risen alongside the expansion. This private-sector-led strength contrasts with Democrats’ signature 2024 promise of a federal ban on grocery “price gouging,” a measure most economists said would do little to lower current prices and risked shortages by interfering with market signals.
