New research from Time Doctor analyzing 260,000 workers reveals companies are measuring performance wrong.

LAS VEGAS, NV / ACCESS Newswire / April 2, 2026 / The way most organizations measure productivity is fundamentally flawed and many leaders know it.

Time Doctor today released its 2026 Productivity & Engagement Benchmarks Report, analyzing behavioral work data from more than 260,000 employees across 12,000 organizations in 33 countries.

The report finds that 66 percent of leaders do not trust the data they rely on to measure performance. At the same time, global employee engagement has fallen to 21 percent - its lowest point since 2020 - contributing to an estimated $438 billion in lost productivity annually, according to Gallup. As AI, distributed work, and digital collaboration reshape how work gets done, traditional productivity metrics are becoming increasingly disconnected from reality.

The findings show why. Across every function, the behaviors that drive high performance look nothing like the standards most organizations are measuring against:

  • Customer support: Top-performing teams take an average of 56 minutes of breaks per day while maintaining the lowest unproductive time of any function

  • Sales: Idle time exceeds 60%, driven primarily by meetings - not disengagement

  • Marketing: Leads in AI adoption, but also shows the highest burnout risk in the dataset

  • Finance: Reaches nearly 90% productive time with minimal AI usage, signaling untapped efficiency

None of these patterns fit the standard model of what a productive employee looks like.

Performance is not universal. Applying the same metrics across roles does not reveal performance; it obscures it. Leaders end up rewarding the wrong behaviors, missing early signs of burnout, and making workforce decisions based on data that does not reflect how work actually happens.

"Most companies think they have a clear view of productivity, but they are measuring proxies that do not reflect how work actually gets done," said Brian Sharp, CEO of Time Doctor. "When you measure a sales rep the same way you measure a finance analyst, you are not getting a signal. You are getting noise. And when the data is wrong, the decisions are wrong. That shows up in attrition, in burnout, in teams that look productive on paper but are quietly falling apart."

The consequences go beyond inaccurate reporting. Without role-specific benchmarks, organizations optimize for visibility instead of outcomes. They push teams toward longer hours and higher activity levels that do not improve performance and can accelerate burnout. And without reliable data, resource and investment decisions become difficult to justify and easy to get wrong.
